The ontology of a pier is contingent upon its dialectic relationship with water, its presence often manifests most poignantly through its absence. As the waters of Lake Van have receded rapidly in recent years, tangibly laying bare the effects of climate change, the severance of contact with the water transforms the pier into a purposeless heap, and the shore into a land that has lost its memory. The landlocked piers are now anachronistic objects, out of their own time.

No longer touching the water, these structures remain suspended in the void as forms that have lost their function. The shore shifts, the water abandons, the structures are rendered meaningless; in the wake of the climate crisis, stripped of their purpose, these structures reveal the fragility of the relationship between humans and nature.
