A pier only exists in relation to the water. When the water recedes, its presence is defined by what is missing.
As the climate crisis causes Lake Van’s waters to pull back rapidly, these piers lose their contact with the lake. Stripped of their purpose, they become obsolete structures on a shoreline that is losing its memory. They are suspended in time—forms that no longer serve a function. The landlocked piers are not ruins of the future, but archaeological remains of the present; they are now anachronistic objects, out of their own time.
By standing isolated on dry land, these abandoned piers reveal just how fragile the bond between humanity and nature truly is.​
